Remediation tickets: how Contested turns AI answers into work

A case-file ticket is a task that starts from one thing an AI engine said about your brand, quoted word for word, and ends with the fix wording to publish and a line that says when you are done.

Key facts

  • Every case file shows what the engine said, the question that was asked, and the page that probably fed the answer. The source is the most likely one, not proof.
  • An audit asks the ticket writer for 5 or 6 case files, fewer when the evidence cannot support them. The plan shows the first 5, and case files come first.
  • Each ticket carries an evidence level (strong, moderate or speculative) and a typical time to see a change, labelled typical, not guaranteed.
  • After every audit Contested checks the tickets you finished and reports Happened, Not yet or Can't tell. A check does not prove the ticket caused a change.
  • Contested does not post for you, does not promise a result and does not see Google's internal data; Search Console's Generative AI performance report is the place for real impressions.

What is a case-file ticket?

A score tells you that an engine does not name you, or names you with a doubt. A case file tells you what to do about one specific answer. It is built from the audit's own evidence, so it reads differently for every brand.

A case file holds these parts:

  • What the engine said, quoted word for word from its answer, and the buyer question that was asked.
  • Where it probably came from: the page the engine cited, with the excerpt it returned. This is the most likely source, not proof.
  • The fix wording, ready to publish. It comes in one of four forms: new wording for one of your pages, an FAQ entry with structured data, a note to the editor of a page that mentions you, or a disclosed reply for a person on your team to post.
  • Why it changes future answers, in a sentence.
  • Numbered steps, and a done-when line so anyone can tell the work is finished.
  • An evidence level and a typical time to see a change.

What does one look like?

This is an illustrative sample from a fictional brand called Vantagely. It is not a real customer. The result strip at the bottom shows the check that follows once the ticket is marked done.

Gemini says Vantagely's custom domains are enterprise-only

P0Moderate evidenceHigh effort

What Gemini said

“Vantagely offers custom domains only on its top plan.”

Asked: “Which client reporting tools let agencies use their own domain?”

The roundup Gemini cites repeats an older line that custom domains need the top plan. Your own site never says which plans include them, so the engine passes the page's version on.

Where it probably came from

agencystack-weekly.com

Review guide · cited by Gemini for this answer

“Vantagely: custom domains are limited to the top plan, according to the vendor's older docs.”

Engines combine several pages, so this is the most likely source, not proof.

The fix: New wording for /white-label

Now: no page today

Custom domains are included on every plan. Add yours in Settings, point a CNAME at reports.vantagely.io, and your clients see your name on every report.

Why this changes future answers

Engines quote the clearest statement they can retrieve. A plain page that answers the exact question gives them something current to quote instead of the older line.

Steps

  1. Publish the page at /white-label with the text above.
  2. Link it from the plans page and the footer.
  3. Ask the roundup's editor to update the line, quoting your page.

A check shows what happened. It does not prove the ticket caused it.

A ticket from an illustrative brand. What Gemini said: Vantagely offers custom domains only on its top plan. It names the page that probably fed the answer, gives new wording, steps and a done-when line, then shows the result of the check: ✓ Happened.

How many tickets does an audit give you?

The ticket writer is asked for 5 or 6 case files, and for fewer when the evidence cannot support them honestly. Each case file rests on a different thing an engine said, and no more than two rest on the same page.

Case files lead the plan. They are followed by the standard kinds of work: digital PR, counter-positioning, authority listings, community response and technical hygiene. The plan shows the first 5; the rest sit behind one link.

What do strong, moderate and speculative mean?

The level belongs to the kind of work, not to your brand. It says how well that kind of work is known to move answers from engines that search the web. It is not a forecast.

  • Strong: digital PR, meaning being listed on the pages engines already cite. A change typically shows in 2 to 8 weeks.
  • Moderate: counter-positioning (clear claims on your own comparison and product pages) and authority listings (current profiles on review sites), both typically 4 to 12 weeks, and community response, typically 1 to 3 months.
  • Speculative: technical hygiene. Structured data helps Google understand a business, which feeds AI Overviews indirectly. No major engine has confirmed that it reads llms.txt. Contested rates these as cheap hygiene, not a growth lever.

How does Contested keep tickets honest?

A written ticket is checked by code before you see it, and it is thrown out if it fails. A ticket is dropped when:

  • the quote from the engine is not word for word in the engine's answer, or the source excerpt is not word for word in the source;
  • the fix states a number that the evidence does not show;
  • the explanation promises a result;
  • it is generic advice, or a to-do instead of words you can paste;
  • it would read the same for any competitor, because nothing in it comes from this audit's evidence;
  • a reply is not aimed at a forum thread, contains a link, sounds promotional or pretends to be someone else. Every reply starts with a line saying who is writing.

What if the engine is right?

Sometimes the engine says something true, such as a feature you do not have yet. Contested marks the case file as one where the engine is right, and the fix answers it honestly: it states what exists, what does not, and what to say until then. It does not argue with the engine.

A second sample from Vantagely shows that case, and a third shows a disclosed reply that a person on the team reads, edits and posts.

How does Contested check a finished ticket?

When you mark a ticket done, Contested keeps a copy of it. After each later audit it runs one yes-or-no check for that kind of work and shows the result on the ticket: Happened, Not yet or Can't tell.

  • Digital PR: do up to 5 of the named pages now name your brand.
  • Technical hygiene: does the home page carry valid structured data, and is there a real llms.txt file.
  • Community response: is the objection missing from the latest audit's objections.
  • Counter-positioning: is a page on your own site named in the ticket among the pages the engines cited.
  • Authority listings: is a listing site named in the ticket among the pages the engines cited.

What can a check not tell you?

A check shows what happened. It does not prove the ticket caused a change in the score or in an answer. Engines vary from one run to the next, and many things change at once.

When a check cannot be made, for example a site blocks automated visits, the ticket named no page, or the audit had answers missing, the result is Can't tell. A Can't tell is never turned into a No. Not yet shows how long that kind of work usually takes.

What happens to tickets over time?

Each brand has one running list. An audit adds only tickets that are new. A tick belongs to the brand, not to one audit, so rewording or renumbering a ticket does not undo it.

  • Finished: one line for each ticket you ticked, with what the check found and an Undo.
  • Older ideas: open tickets that have not come up in the last 3 audits. Nothing is deleted.
  • Hidden: tickets you marked Not relevant. They leave the plan, the PDF and any send, and stay hidden when a later audit writes them again.
  • New rounds: if a finished ticket comes up again because the check found it happened, because half or more of its pages are new, or because 8 weeks have passed, it opens as a new round.

Where can tickets go?

Every ticket can be exported as CSV, Markdown or a pre-filled Jira link. On paid plans you can also send tickets to Trello, Asana or monday.com as cards, once you have connected the tool. The paste-ready fix wording stays in the Contested ticket and in the CSV and Markdown export; it is not in the card.

What will Contested not do?

  • It does not publish anything for you. The fix wording is a draft for your team to read, check and edit, and facts it could not confirm are left as marked gaps for you to fill.
  • It does not infer buyer objections or sentiment from general Reddit searches. The Community tab shows only Reddit and LinkedIn citations from AI engines that we checked to confirm mention your brand.
  • It does not promise a result, and it does not claim a ticket caused a change.
  • It does not watch your brand every day. Audits run when you ask for them.

Questions

What is a case-file ticket?

A case-file ticket is a task that starts from one thing an AI engine said about your brand, quoted word for word. It names the page that probably fed the answer, gives the fix wording to publish, explains why it changes future answers, lists the steps and says when you are done.

Does Contested prove that a ticket changed my score?

No. After an audit Contested checks the tickets you finished and reports Happened, Not yet or Can't tell. That shows what happened, not what caused it.

How many tickets does an audit produce?

The ticket writer is asked for 5 or 6 case files, fewer when the evidence cannot support them. The plan shows the first 5, and the rest sit behind one link.

Does Contested write and publish the fixes for me?

It drafts the fix wording. Your team reads, checks and edits it, and publishes it. Contested does not post for you, and a reply to a community thread is always posted by a person on your team.

Why are some tickets rated speculative?

The level describes how well that kind of work is known to move answers. Structured data and llms.txt are rated speculative because no major engine has confirmed that it reads llms.txt, and structured data helps Google only indirectly.
